- back-up system

-> bad branch fixed by the others

- allow checks and balances

-> power divided requires conflict, only necessary laws survive

- broaden political debate, not just one leader

- allow specialization of labor

-> each branch can do its work precisely since focused

- Bicameralism (2 house congress)

-> legacy of House of Lords and House of Commons

-> also useful since one branch can check the other
