LecturesNone at this point. AssignmentsDue 3/ - Sergeant York film response Due Wednesday 3/25 - Questions for Apocalypse Now Due Friday 4/10 - Unit Essay: Given the movies that we have watched in this unit, has America really changed all that much in the way that we view war? Are we still essentially the same people who found meaning in All Quiet on the Western Front and Sergeant York? Defend your response with examples from the films we have watched. FilmsAll Quiet on the Western Front - 1930 Sergeant York - 1941 Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - 1964 Apocalypse Now (only showed about 40 disconnected, combat-related scenes from this film) - 1979 Band of Brothers (Episode 2) - 2001 Note: This is an HBO TV-MA mini-series. There is a decent amount of swearing and a good deal of violence. However, this mini-series is completely documentary and non-sensationalistic. Additional Suggested Films (or non-R-rated Replacements)Three Kings - 1999 Note: This movie is R-rated. It's not exactly a war movie, but it is an interesting picture of what America thought of war before 9/11/2001. ReadingsNone so far. Unit Links (not required)None so far. |
