10/8 – "Modest Proposal" and Overview of the French Revolution

 

* Collect the "Modest Proposal" readings and questions.  Discuss the reading questions.  Pay particular attention to the idea of caring for the poor enough to bother.  Enlightenment and poverty makes for anger. - 15 minutes

 

* Discuss the NYT torture memo extra credit assignment. – 15 minutes

 

* Quick gloss of the French Revolution.  Why is it important? – 10 minutes

 

* Watch the first part of "The French Revolution" – 40 minutes

10/9 – Poverty and Violence & Intro to the French Revolution

 

* Put up the 4 poverty-inspired violence situation questions.  Have the students write their response to the questions.  After they’re all done, collect the answers.  Discuss each case.  Order them by morality, likelihood, difficulty, etc. - 45 minutes

 

* Lecture: "Intro to the French Revolution" - 30 minutes

 

* Explain that the test for this unit will be an essay due on 10/23 and a vocabulary quiz 10/22.  Hand out the essay question strips for the French Revolution essay.  Discuss the basic requirements for the essay. - 5 minutes

10/10 - Revolt of the Nobles

 

* Lecture: "The Revolt of the Nobles" - 25 minutes

 

* Tell the hat story from Schama. - 10 minutes

 

* Read and discuss the speech of Louis XVI on the opening of the Estates General. - 25 minutes

 

* Quick-write: If you were Louis XVI and you had to face the Estates General on May 9, 1789, what would you say to those people?  Read some volunteers after a bit. - 20 minutes

10/11 - The Revolution Unleashed

 

* Worksheet on pp.469-473 “French Revolution” – 40 minutes

 

* Graded Lecture:  "The Revolution Unleashed."  Set the stage for the Dec. of the Rights of Man. - 30 minutes

 

* Hand out the "Declaration of the Rights of Man."  Read the first paragraph and talk about how to simplify it.  Hand out the DofRofM questions.  Due on Monday. - 15 minutes

10/15 - Declaration of the Rights of Man & The Liberal Revolution


* Collect the "Declaration of the Rights of Man" homework.  Hand out the US Bill of Rights again.  Discuss the similarities and differences between the two documents. - 25 minutes

 

* Explain that the Olympe de Gouges reading and Qs and tell them to finish it by Wednesday 10/17. - 5 minutes

 

* Lecture: "The Liberal Revolution" - 30 minutes

 

* Watch the last part of "The French Revolution" – 25 minutes

10/16 - The Radicalization of the Revolution

 

* Lecture: "The Radicalization of the Revolution" - 30 minutes

 

* Read "The Radical Revolution" for a reading quiz.  When done, take the reading quiz. – 50 minutes

* Collect and discuss the Olympe de Gouges reading. - 15 minutes

 

* Read and discuss "Maximilien Robespierre: Justification of the Use of Terror - February 5, 1794" - 35 minutes

 

* Gloss lecture: "The Radical Revolution" Explain why people supported (and still support) this phase. - 30 minutes

10/18 - Napoleon

 

* Warn students to bring all of their notes tomorrow.  Warn them that the vocabulary quiz is Friday. - 5 minutes

 

* Read and answer Qs on "Napoleon" (pp.474-478) - 45 minutes

10/19 – Napoleon's Legacy plus Essay pre-write time

 

* Lecture: “Napoleon's Legacy” - 35 minutes

 

* Put students into 6 groups.  Give each group a piece of butcher paper.  Each group has to create a study broadsheet on their following assigned topics:

3 x What's good about the: Liberal Revolution, Radical Revolution, Napoleon

3 x What's bad about the: Liberal Revolution, Radical Revolution, Napoleon

 

Make sure they complete one dark and well-written enough that I can scan them for the web site.
