As supplement to the task that was entrusted to you in the decree dated 24 January 1939, to solve the Jewish question by emigration and evacuation in the most favorable way possible, I herewith commission you to carry out all necessary preparations with regard to organizational, substantive, and financial viewpoints for a total solution of the Jewish question in the German sphere of influence in Europe.

The following is taken from a speech given by the head of the SS, Heinrich Himmler, to the leaders of the SS. The speech was given in October of 1943, after the final solution had begun.
I want to speak to you in all openness about a very delicate subject. Among us it should be talked about quite openly, but despite this we shall never talk about it in public...I mean the evacuation of the Jews, the extermination of the Jewish people. This is one of those things that one says easily enough. "The Jewish people will be exterminated," says many a party comrade. "OK - stands in the program - elimination of Jews - extermination - we'll do it." And then they come, the 80 million worthy Germans, and every one has his one good Jew. It's clear; the rest are all swine, but this one is a first-class Jew. Of all the people that talk that way, none has seen it happen, none has been through it. The most of you know what it means when a hundred corpses are lying together, when five hundred are lying there, or when a thousand are lying there. To have seen that through and while doing so - leaving aside exceptions owing to human weakness - to have maintained integrity, this has made us hard. This is an unwritten and never-to-be-written page of glory in our history.
