12/10 – Global Depression and Maus

* Collect and discuss the questions to Hitler's 1921 speech. – 25 minutes 

 

* Lecture (start): “Nazism and Hitler” – 10 minutes

 

* Have them get the Maus books.  Hand out the Maus questions. Go over what the questions mean.  Flip through the books and explain how to give examples for the question answers.  Read the first 20 or so pages and discuss if time.  Give them time to start reading.  – 45 minutes

* Read "The Global Depression" (pp. 641-644)  – 15 minutes

 

* Lecture: “Nazism and Hitler” – 30 minutes

12/12 – Maus and Library Time for the Research Paper

* Go to the library and work on the research papers. – 45 minutes

12/13 – Maus and the Timeline to WWII  the Holocaust

* Collect the Works Cited page for the research paper.

 

* Using a timeline of the lead-up to WWII.  Hitler’s small steps. – 25 minutes

 

* Maus reading time.  – 45 minutes

 

* Talk about the Maus book so far.  Talk through the early questions.  – 15 minutes

12/14 – Early WWII and Maus

* Using maps drawn on the board, discuss the progress of the war up to Stalingrad. – 30 minutes

12/17 -  Holocaust Timeline and Maus

* Hand out the Fascist quotes page.  Discuss the Final Solution speech by Himmler.  – 15 minutes

 

* Hand out the “Holocaust Readings Packet” and the questions.  Read the timeline of the holocaust and discuss the first question.  Write the answer in class. – 25 minutes 

 

* Maus reading time.  – 50 minutes

12/18 – Just Following Orders, the End of  WWII and the Bomb

* Worksheet on "Allied Victories" (pp.702-710) – 50 minutes

 

OR

 

* Maus reading time.  – 50 minutes

 

* Go over the Hoess reading from the Holocaust readings packet.  Discuss, write.  – 30 minutes

 

* Materials – “Holocaust Readings Packet” and the questions.  Fascist quotes sheet; Maus books; take-home readings for Allied Victories; Worksheet on "Allied Victories" (pp.702-710)

 

 

12/19 – Night and Fog + "Requiem for the Victims of War and Fascism"

* Collect the research papers.  Go through each person and have them say the key thing they learned. – 20 minutes

 

* Show “Night and Fog” and then discuss it. – 35 minutes

 

* Listen to Shostakovich's Quartet No. 8.  Beforehand, explain it as a piece of memorial music.  As they listen students write down everything they imagine as they year the piece.  Final question after their flow-of-consciousness writing: Does this piece serve as an appropriate memorial? – 30 minutes

 

* Materials – Unit Test; Night and Fog; Shostakovich's Quartet No. 8 recording.

 

 

12/20  – Unit Test

* Collect the Maus questions. 

 

* For the first part of class, students may work in self-selected groups of 4 to make study sheets that they can use on the test that follows immediately. – 35 minutes

 

* Take the test. – 50 minutes

12/21 – Revenge, Selective Abortion, and the Holocaust wrap-up

* Discuss the answers to the Maus qs.  – 20-30 minutes
