Chicago Manual of Style Citation - Humanities Format

Part of citing works is attaching a list of the sources of your data to every important piece of work that you do. This list of Works Cited allows your reader to dig up the sources of your data and look for themselves.

On easy way to cite works is to use the Slate Citation Machine. Just type in your information and it will create a proper citation for you. Be sure to chose the "Chicago Citation" version.

The Chicago forms for citing works in the works cited page are as follows:

 

 

How to Make Works Cited Page Entries

 

Book with One Author

Author last name, Author first name. Title underlined OR italicized. Place of publication: Publisher, Date of publication.

 

Example:

Branch, Taylor. Pillar of Fire. New York: Simon Schuster, 1999.

 

 

Book with Two Authors

Author last name, Author first name and Author first name Author last name. Title underlined OR italicized. Place of publication: Publisher, Date of publication.

 

Example:

Bonds, Barry and Tyler Hamilton. Playing Fair. California: SI Press, 2005.

 

 

Book with an Editor

Editor last name, Editor first name, ed. Title underlined OR italicized. Place of publication: Publisher, Date of publication.

 

Example:

Travis, Carol, ed. Mismeasure of Woman. London: Oxford Press. 1993.

 

 

Journal or Magazine Article

Author last name, Author first name. "Article Title." Title of Journal or Magazine underlined OR italicized. (Date of publication): page range.

 

Example:

Hoover, Carlos. "Things Suck." Journal of Vacuum Studies. (January 2002): 13-15.

 

 

Newspaper Article

Author last name, Author first name. "Article Title." Newspaper, Date, Section of the paper.

 

Example:

Howe, Karl. "Baseball's Money Problem." New York Times, March 7, 2003, Sports.

 

Web Site

Author last name, Author first name. "Individual Page Title." Root Cite Title. www.URL.com/moreinfo.htm (Date or date accessed if no date is listed on the site).

 

Example:

Guye, Sommé. "The Emperor Trajan." Rome Web. www.uwisc.somme/emperors/trajan.htm (accessed April 1, 2006).

NOTE: Many web sites have no author.  Leave the author blank in that case.
